Zusaetliches Kriterium, wenigstens in NL:

There is a better system using a friction joint --looks like a Draftsman arm joint used by some Dodge WW2 trucks.

Hmmm....

First:
I was once led to believe that this very WW2 Dodge truck (WC-series, WC52, aka WarWagon) had the tooth-joint (Hirth-Gelenk/Hirth-Joint) I mentioned before, as being the best 'flexible' candidate.
(also being the one that came factory on Malaysian/tropical C3-series)
(not sure about C2-series?....anyone?)

Second:
It seems none of these old Dodges have this tooth-joint, but a sliding joint.
(hard to find images, largest simplified sample is 3/4th down this page:
https://midwestmilitary.com/midwestmilitary/dodgewc13.html
('Windshield Hold Open Arm')

WC54/ambulance, second picture:

http://www.command-car.com/technik/bilder/detail21.jpg

Czech Prada implementation:
http://www.veteranarmy.cz/data/servis/19_katalog.pdf
(one of the very rare 6x6's with portal axles (duallies, sadly))

Third:
Your Draftsman (arm) Joint seems yet another concept, more like a parallellogram, common with reading/desktop lamps, or at least a double arm with a friction joint/pivot inbetween.
(while my tooth-joint is that same double arm, but with a tooth-joint inbetween)

Fourth:
In hindsight, this Dodge sliding joint is not ideal in my opinion either, because it lacks a 'discrete' position/angle, cq allows small differences between left and right, on the same single windscreen-frame, possibly/likely creating tension in both metal & glass.
Worse: if you hit a speedbump or pothole, you are relying heavily on how strong you have tightened that friction joint.
('Kraft-Schluss', instead of 'Form-Schluss')

Fifth:
That said, there is nothing preventing such a sliding joint to be designed *with* teeth, for discrete positioning; also Form-Schluss instead of Kraft-Schluss.
Because dynamically/structually speaking, the sliding joint is more simple, less stress on those teeth, enduring only linear force, instead of torque in case of a two-arm (tooth-)joint/pivot.
(with maximum torque in the near-closed position (which as such is the least dangerous, for not generating much travel/speed before hitting the front body))

Anyway, if anyone knows a good source for such a sliding joint *with* teeth, please tell....:))

Hmmm....
Sixth!
My thoughts & concepts for 'remote operation' thusfar only focused on the linear systems (like that sliding joint), by using a pressure cylinder, either air or hydraulic (mechanical, by screw, seems complicated/heavy (although those too exist as telescopic devices, IIRC (otherwise the lenght of the screw would be prohibitive, sticking into the cabin in the closed position of the windscreen))
But what I overlooked thusfar, is remote operation of the two-arm tooth/pivot concept....not neccessarily small/elegant, but mechanically very well possible, by using worm & roll....:))
(although, size: one wouldn't need much more than a windscreen-wiper motor plus some heavy gear-reductor (though the worm & roll should ideally be on the end of that transmission, not inbetween, or near the motor))

Addendum sliding joint:

Creating (or even modifying) one with teeth, for discrete positioning (Formschluss instead of Kraftschluss), is actually quite easy, by cutting several (5-10, depending on length of the sliding arm) short separate slots into the slider, perpendicular to the long slot (or better: at a sharper angle than 90 degree, so that even without tightening the screw knob, the slider will stay in that position by default (save for the dynamics of that pesky speedbump or pothole, so it has to be tightened still)).

Btw, I also noticed that several agricultural vehicles have upwards opening windows, both front and rear, but as far as I could see, they were held open by gas-struts/pressure-cylinders, possibly with an additional screw knob for tightening/fixture.
For low speed vehicles this might be okay, but the dynamics at our Volvo-typical speeds require something more beefy & foolproof.
(plus ideally also an easy & foolproof concept of the windscreen staying in position with only a small opening, for minimum ventilation, starting from fully closed (even works in mild rain, at least until you reach speeds at which the rain hitting the front lower body (just below the windscreen) will be driven upwards, and flies into the cabin (I think a small rain-deflecting ridge  on the body just below the windscreen could solve that problem rather easily))
