Theft-prevention policy: write down the serial number of your axles!

Gerade gepostet auf Terrangbil, bezueglich diesen gestolen TGB1314 (und zu faul zum uebersetzen, und wir haben ja auch einige Englisch-sprachige Mitglieder....;))

Maybe it would be a good idea for all of us to also write down the serial-number of our portal axles, and post/announce them publicly in case of theft....
Of course, they could remove the ID-tag on the axle, but it also lists the gear-ratio, so that wouldn't be smart, nor would any person/seller like to be known as someone who sells axles without ID-tag all the time....that would make him a very suspected source in no-time, and a prime target for any police investiation (with the most simple counter-question: "*Where* did you get these axles from then?....where is the remaining vehicle?"

Interesting problem for any thief: once the axles are removed, the remaining vehicle can hardly be transported anymore, so it will sit on his property as evidence of theft....

And of course: put a notification message on your windows, possibly also on the dashboard, so that any thief *knows* you have written down the serial number of those axles.
(plus some kind of text stating that you have thousands of friends, worldwide, not just in Sweden, who will be on the lookout for those suspect axles, and turn anyone in to the police)

1) Uebersetzungsverhaeltniss (pinion x ring-gear)
2) Teilnummer (1522994 beim TGB20)
3) Fabr. No.

Gleich noch mal (etwas erweitert) auf English, gerade auf Terrangbil gepostet:

In an ideal, perfect, world, Volvo would have had a database, linking framenumber to a various range of serial-numers; axles, engine, gearboxes....even the cabin has it's own number, IIRC (the tag high up, behind the driver).
But alas, Volvo doesn't even have the most basic technical data/documents/approvals anymore....
(however, perhaps the military did have some kind of database, if only to track & trace possible technical problems?)

Anyway, I would *not* give up hope to retrieve the vehicle yet....organized criminal gangs even have a policy to let the vehicle 'chill-out', before transporting the 'hot' vehicle further down their pipe-line.
They calculate that the risk of getting caught by police or informants (friends/web) is less if some time has passed.
In NL/Benelux context the vehicle is often stored just before the next border, to avoid the temporarily intensified search by police/border-patrol/customs....too hot to handle....but only temporarily.
(actually, this storage location isn't even private property/territory, because that would be evidence of crime against anyone owning that territory/garage....so often the vehicle is stored on some abandoned truck parking lot, where hardly anyone ever checks any vehicle, far away from the main/frequently visited locations)

Btw, I had to check an old image of such an axle ID-tag, since I forgot the exact format; it contains 3 sections:

1) gear ratio (#teeth pinion x #teet ring-gear) (9x33)
2) part number (1522994)
3) 'Fabr. No.', which is the serial number.

Only slight disadvantage is that 3) is only valid/unique within a given gear-ratio/part-number, so it can't be used as an absolute relevance/determination, like a true serial number would....the sample I had for a TGB20 shows '970'.
(which seems low, but does make sense, since the 7.6 axles were only mounted on the TGB20....just not sure whether the partnumber indicates the complete axle or just the diff (suggesting a total number of TGB20's of either 970:2 or 970:3....:))

Btw2: for those of you looking for more active theft-prevention systems, consider the Mul-T-Lock gear-box lock (with the additional advantage in our Volvo's that it can lock the T-case at the same time (otherwise you would actually need 2 locks, to lock both gearbox and T-case, with separate sticks, like in any other 4x4)
Not an easy product to find, has been discouraged by many European insurance companies, while it is one of the most foolproof concepts in the industry, almost mandatory in South-Africa & South-Africa, standard in cargo-trucks from VOS/Holland, the *only* anti-theft option from Toyota Gibraltar (huge exporter of Land Cruisers for UN & ohter non-profit organisations worldwide) and best reference: made in Israel.

Since even Google had difficult spitting out the better links, I created a file some years ago:
