Replacement bottle jack / Ersatz-Flaschenheber

I once stumbled upon the intriguing combination of a hydraulic bottle jack with a scissors jack, from Westfalia, discounted.
(I needed one, because the firebrigade sold the vehicle to me completely empty....only the wood support block was still present, possibly just for them no longer knowing that it was for....:))
(they were 2nd owner)

Intriguing, because a normal scissors jack is an ergonomic-handling pest, requiring both hands/arms, strongly/stretched/high-up, to keep it upright, while 'idling' upwards, until locked in place.

Geometrically though, a scissor is relatively efficient, allowing height without a lot of metal, plus maximum force-efficiency at the elevated position.

Perhaps a bottle jack has benefits in very dirty conditions, otherwise filling/messing up the scissors worm-shaft.

Also bought from Westfalia a disounted telescope lugnut wrench/handle with 24/27mm socket.
Not seen that one being offered ever again....can only imagine someone in a Chinese factory screwed up the spec's....:))

More lazy folks could also be inclined to find a 12v electric scissors jack (elektro-mechanical), but 12v hydro-mechanical jacks also exist, mostly bottle, but also some as scissors-come).
Just be sure to mistrust the weight ratings, ranging from 500kg to 2000kg.
(and have some robust 24v->12v conversion at hand)
(never seen any of these in 24v)

And if you already have a decent compressed-air system on board, you could even conidered an air-jack (could even fabricate one from an older/surplus truck air spring bellows).
(not locking/latching, so for safety once up, you need another rigid support)

NB, seems Westfalia.de doesn't have much automotive stuff anymore; elsewhere only this one was found in a quick search, but too light & too expensive:

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/HSJ07/dp/B071DL21DK

[CORRECTION]

The effiency-bonus for a scissors jack (on max elevation) applies mostly to the all-mechanical version; the hydro/scissor has a rather complex geometry (then also lacking a work/screw, so dirt is less relevant (still moving pivots/joints/hinges)).

Btw, in German it's "Wagenheber" in general, "hydraulischer/Teleskop Wagenheber" in specific.
(the scissors type is called "Scherenwagenheber")

(but not Flaschenheber; that would be more like a bloke hanging in/on a bar....;))

Also in general, I believe the Unimog OEM bottle jacks are a decent alternative, being in a similar range of ground/axle clearance.

Thanks for pointing that out. Ironically I was suspicious of that translation before I posted it, because I knew that a jack was "Wagenheber" and German is usually both logical and literal. I thought it should have been Flaschenwagenheber but I trusted Google instead. Interestingly, Google translates "Scissor jack" to "Scherenwagenheber" but "scissors jack" to Scherenheber. "Scissors" are always plural in English, since there are two blades.

As an aside, I'm also generally uncomfortable with "Ersatz" as the English usage of this German word implies something "fake" or of lower quality.

I did have a look at the Unimog jacks but they're expensive, the capacity is too high - usually 10 tons, and the max lift is similar to the Sprinter jack pictured above. In the meantime I found another one that may be suitable. I just need to check with Tatanka whether the jack saddle they have will fit.

Btw, generally speaking, it might be more efficient to either find or fabricate a matching (wooden) bottom support/elevator (assuming you don't have one of these either), cq compromise a bit (more) on the bottle jack itself.

Rarely would you want to put any bottle jack on bare (sinking) ground, not even pavement/concrete (especially when it's your own driveway).

What's left is a range just covering the difference in tire height, flat vs inflated.

Also, there must be a surplus of matching adapters on this planet, old & used, but more likely tossed out in the bin as scrap metal than offered on any second-hand market/auction platform, so finding one is probably a challenge, other than browsing/walking the most low grade second hand markets & garage sales....

Yes, that's the plan. Still need the jack to have sufficient range though, I only want to carry one wooden stool  smiley

Last night I stumbled across this intriguing combination:

That's cool indeed, if only for creating/synergising the obvious, like this [SMACK-HEAD] could have been done decades ago....:))
(perhaps they did, but I have never seen this concept before either)

That said, to overcome the disappointing 'we don't ship outside CA/USA' on that page:

https://www.amazon.nl/Powerbuilt-620471-hydraulische-elimineert-vrachtwagens/dp/B00GJJZ5NI

https://nl.jbtools.com/powerbuilt-620471-3-ton-all-in-one-hydraulic-bottle-jack-and-jackstand
(sold out, but with email-notification on request)

(still no UK for you, but at least somewhere in Europe (no German sources either))

Btw, Murphy says you might need 4wd to drive off the jack, once that ratching/latching locking mechanism gets stuck with/in dirt/mud....;))

But it also makes a stool/platform redundant.
(just a bit nasty sharp/pointy, asking for some round-off grinder....:))

I have two 3t bottle jacks always in my TGB. https://www.billiger.de/pricelist/4011461425-yato-hydraulic-bottle-jack-3t I think every similat device will do as well. They're not high enough alone, so I carry also a wooden block with me. For me the best price performance ratio, and the best compromise between weight, size, height. The ones which would be high enough withot wood would be much heavier, bulkier and more expensive ones. After 6 years, one of the jacks begins to sag, so I'll replace it.

I have had extensive experience with these combination bottle jack/jack stand units over the past seven years. I sourced them from a local Tractor Supply outlet first in Washington State and then a new outlet closer to our farm in Oregon. They were sole source for these until recently. They cost under $30 USD when I bought the first two and have paid just under $60 USD for the last four I purchased three years ago. We have used them on many of our farm vehicles and I have used six at once to raise all three axles of our TGB1314A off the ground simultaneously. If I were to make one modification, it would be to slightly widen the contact cradle to exactly match the external square contour of the square Volvo TGB axles. Instead, I use the vehicle spring mounts which also work perfectly. We have yet to have any failure whatsoever. I am happy to see they are now available through Eastwood and Amazon. I fully recommend these jack/jack stand combination.

Seems 'Ersatz' has (indeed) some lovely (odd/contrary) additional meaning/context in English....:))
(this is about the epithome of it, then....:))
(".... - as Ersatz as the man himself.")

https://x.com/SethAbramson/status/1840270645143236712/photo/1

(WJM always thought 'Kindergarten' was the most common German word in English)
(even Chinese use it, generally/structurally!....:))

NB: don't read too much more there from Seth, as you will never ever touch a Tesla again, not even with a 10-foot pole.

Wo im Fahrzeug verstauen Sie Wagenheber, Holzschemel und Holzklotz und sind diese festgebunden?

Where inside the vehicle do you store the vehicle jack, wooden stool and wooden block, and are they tied down?

Price-wise, the difference with this auto-locking version is getting smaller (95 euro, shipping included (but seems to be an NL-source; if I shift to a German delivery adress, it becomes 10-20 euro more expensive):
(with 11-21" also physically close)
