For a Scandinavian YouTube/Homevideo, it is miraculously pleasing for the ears....:))

(either natural sound (which the original (analog) film probably didn't have), or something like this....but not the deafening psychedelic hard-rock and whatever garbage they call music up there....it is killing most of the Scandinavian offroad/automotive video's....same for Russian stuff btw....probably has something to do with living near the polar circle, and depressing long dark winters, plus cabin fever)
(suicide rate in both Russia & Finland is scaringly high btw, not sure about Sweden/Norway)

I think that using a UNIMOG could have been for comparison against an accepted bench mark and was perfectly reasonable.  UNIMOG have always offered more choice of wheel and tyre combinations than most manufacturers.  The UNIMOG on the film did not appear to be using the more standard military tyres.  I noticed at times the 8x8 was not appearing to use its differential locks.  This could be seen at times on the uphill sections on the snow slopes when a rear-most wheel of number 2 axle of the front bogey remained stationary while the front-most wheel on number 1 axle spun more quikly.

I enjoyed watching the effortless way in which the 8x8 negotiated obstacles with minimal changes in body attitude even when being driven comparatively quikly.  I think that the 8x8 would have been an ideal long distance off road traveler offering new levels of comfort across rough country.

I know that UNIMOG do offer some 6x6 variants but I do not know if an 8x8 is offered.

I do not recall liking any music that I have come across on any films showing off road vehicles, most of it is crass IMHO, it is though users of such machines and off roaders in general are lacking in any musical culture.  This is a personal opinion of course as is musical choice rolleyes.  I think that usualy films of this sort might be better enjoyed with out music.  After all how many would like my choices of music, Vaughn Williams, Arnold Bax, Sibelius, and whole cohorts of other classical, operatic and non classical preferences. smiley

My wife always complains if I have the volume control on as she hates any of the music offered by such films and always insists that I turn off the volume as I am trying to hear the engine growls and suspension clonks for auditory clews.

How does one attach non standard smileys like Snoop has?

They are embedded like regular external pix, picked from a range of smileys:

No, and even the 6x6 isn't a true bogie-tandem, although it does have some interlinkage, attempting to copy some of that physics (but IMNSHO, if each axle is suspended by a separate spring, be it leaf or coil (in case of the Unimog), the (virtual) bogie can't move as freely as it would/could on a true bogie, at least not at the end of it's travel (compression on one axle far stronger than expansion on the other).
And the 6x6 was rather limited in quantity too, only a few hundred were made, and it is no longer in production either.
(worst: seems the largest contigent was sold to Australia, so it doesn't have the steering wheel on the correct side, even if they become available in 20 or so years....;))

However, in terms of 8x8, you might like large parts of this thread:

http://forum.off-road-forum.de/viewtopic.php?p=209573

Including notes on the Ford military XM757, an 8x8 true bogie-tandem^2, amphibious by pressurised doorseals, and with multifuel engine....:))
(there is a 'wreck' located not too far from here, and I have another military (Jeep) surplus dealer nearby, about to claim to be the largest stock-holder in the world, after having bought the complete stock of 1 or 2 large (retiring?) US-dealers, so he might have some pointers for me too (a Russian guy I met in St. Petersburg, restaurating Willys Jeeps (Russia got a contigent of those from the USA as support during WWII), travels to Holland frequently for that purpose only (and sometimes combines it with a visit to Beltring/UK....:))
(btw, the 'wreck' is only 5k euro....tempting....:))
(neglected, but apparently complete)
(only thing it lacks compared to a modern Ural 8x8 is an onboard tire inflation system)

grin  I can just imagin it.  Listening to Vaughn Willians, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Vaughan_Williams

His, Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis

The Lark Ascending

are just wonderful or any of his music.  I could listen to that with the head phone while watching the films.  My wife would go nuts!  She would want to listen as well.

In this respect, women act like small children....there is no better way for a teacher to silence the entire class by starting to whisper....curiosity will then gain *every* child's attention in no time.

I propose that you then buy 2 headphones; I'll leave it to your imagination whether you'll give her the same nice sound, or something completely else, through a hidden MP3-player, just for fun....:))))

The model c o d e is L4230, but I guess you already tracked that down before....nor does it help in any current search thusfar, it seems....

Weird, having that film (still) in only one place (first release (my observation) was about 2008)).

Not sure if I stored it myself, somewhere....I should have, in hindsight, but for me, storing video's was more a thing of the decade before, mostly through Usenet, where you often didn't have a second chance of catching any movie, being singularly uploaded, at the grace of some volunteer....

(pfff....I first typed 'model-c o d e' with a dash inbetween....never encountered this weird server-side tag-glitch on the forum before....8-))
(nor on any other forum/site, AFAIK (and I must have used that word several times before)
(arggh, dash or no-dash makes no difference....utter horror....only spaces inbetween solve this nightmare....8-))

Hmm, finally I did get a bit closer to the source with that coding....could the one previous online be only a smaller section of this longer & multi-vehicle docu?
(although I recall having written '15 minutes' on Terrangbil in 2008)

http://www.imcdb.org/movie_1004509274-Tunga-terrangfordon.html

Also a few more 'pictures' (video-snaps?) that I don't recall having seen before elsewhere either:

Long Military film of Volvo TGB 8x8 & Amphibian http://www.offrd.se/

I would love one of each why did they not do an 8x8 Amphibian  grin

The full deeplink URL was this, btw:

http://www.offrd.se/video/volvo-8x8

(from posting Anthony's discovery on Terrangbil.net; http://www.terrangbil.net/forum/index.php?/topic/2572-video-volvo-tgb20-8x8-prototype/ )

And there *used* to be an alternative location/version/filename around too, it seems:

http://volvovalp.ifokus.se/discussions/4d7178afb9cb4622390894d6-tgb-8x8#12

Zitat:

http://home.swipnet.se/~w-33916/shoppen/video.htm

So the full original was about 2-2.5 hours, much more than the 8x8 fragment of only 15 minutes....

Hmm....hey!....with those two keywords ("Lätta Terrängfordon" & "Tunga Terrängfordon") I might have found the full source in a modern DVD version (but the cover image is not very conclusive, sadly):

http://www.maskinskyddarna.nu/Lastbilar.html

http://www.lafri.se/group.asp?group=4

http://www.lafri.se/group.asp?group=1203

http://www.lafri.se/product.asp?product=11496

http://www.lafri.se/product.asp?product=11504

So now it is upon the most urgent guy to prove my theory/suspicion....;))
(and spend some money on those DVD's)
(or surprise me with an even more thorough search than the above....:))

Ah yes, this mystery is indeed solved, by the second-last link; video description:

Zitat:
